debord by the drop

The spectacle presents itself simultaneously as society itself, as a part of society, and as a means of unification. As a part of society, it is the focal point of all vision and all consciousness. But due to the very fact that this sector is separate, it is in reality the domain of delusion and false consciousness: the unification it achieves is nothing but an official language of universal separation.

  1. Even in pieces Debord is so opaque, it is hard to know what to make of him. There are so many things that seem true and make me so excited, but then I go back a line and realize that I am not sure what he is referring to. Maybe he is like a revolutionary John the Baptist; he can diagnose but dares not try to cure? And there is such a strange humor in his prose; I want to laugh at the seriousness of it.
